Default Has anyone used this substrate?

I'm planning on a new tank in a few months and was going to go with a plain
sand substrate, but then I saw mention of this stuff..
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...Np=1&N=0&Nty=1

Has anyone used it?? And would it be worth it if I was only going to have a
handful of plants in there?

Works fine for me. Gravity probably doesn't unwrap wrapped links
correctly, is all.

In any case, the product is Eco-Complete plant substrate. I've not used
it myself, so I can't say if it works well or not.

I'm sure you're right about gravity. But as you said I haven't used the
product either, so I'll just shut up:-)

Link worked for me. All it says is: *quote*
No rinsing - packed in Liquid Amazon buffered "Black Water" solution for
immediate organic water conditioning. Contains all mineral nutrients
needed for luxuriant aquatic plant growth. Includes live Heterotrophic
bacteria to rapidly convert fish waste into natural food for your plants.
The perfect substrate for your planted tank! 20 pounds.

*unquote*, looks a little gimmicky to me, but I'd love to hear from
someone who has tried it.

I originally heard about it on the Blood Parrot Forum. 2 people there said
it's wonderful stuff but was wondering if anyone here knew of it. Here's the
topic link if you're interested..

I read a review of this in Practical Fishkeeping magazine (February's
issue).

The author said he has been getting very good results with it, called it
"the freshwater equivalent of live sand" and said he was getting good plant
growth in tanks with and without CO2. The only downside he reported was
that it is very light and easily displaced during water changes.

It seems quite expensive, but I'm pretty tempted to use this for my second
tank (I'm only three months into my first so this is a long term plan .

Another alternative is aquatic planting soil or clay conditioner which is
very close to Seachem's Flourite. I recently bought a 40 lb. bag for under
20.00 for a 55 gallon aquarium. My fish and plants love it and it looks
very natural. It does need lots of washing though to remove dust. I would
use it again in a heart beat.

I asked about Eco-Complete on the BP forum and got a reply from someone who
uses it at home and at her business. She swears by the stuff and says that
b/c the sand is packed in bacteria-rich water, it will instantly cycle your
tank (much like biospira, I gather).
