I have an FO only talk with three fish. The tank is about 1 year old
and in pretty good shape. However I have noticed that my fish (eyes and skin) seem to have a white fim on them. They are eating quite well and seem to be in good spirits. Can anyone suggest some things to look for or any disease that I might be heading into? Thanks, |

From your description it sounds like your fish has Maracyn, Do a google
search on it, to see if this is indeed what your fish has, if so there are products such as Mardel for treatment. You should also set up a hospital tank and quarantine the infected fish until you A: know what it is and B: can treat him without affect your other stock. Maracyn is not effective as a treatment for ick or velvet disease. These are parasitical. George Patterson No one ever says "It's only a game." when his team is winning. |

Sounds like "velvet disease", properly known as Amyloodinium ocellatum. This is a parasite. Usually, the fish dashes around and attempts to scratch itself on items in the tank. Rapid gill movement is common. The parasites damage the gills, so, eventually, the fish becomes lethargic and dies. Since you have a FO tank, this should be treated with citrated copper sulphate. Buy a good copper test kit to use with this, and maintain the recommended concentration for at least two weeks. If you overdose, you will kill the fish. If you fail to keep the concentration high enough or for long enough, the disease will return. If your tank contained live rock or any of a variety of other animals, you would have to remove the fish into a quarantine tank for treatment and keep fish out of your main tank for at least a month. Thanks, ok, bad news, my Yellow tang just died and it looks like my other fish is going to die in the next 4 hours. They fish is covered in a white very thin film (fungus) and his fins are falling apart. I still have one fish including a star fish that don't seem to be affected at all! Is this ich and is there a site that provides the best plan to address the tank? also, any idea's on why my other fish has not been affected? Cheers Wade |

If you have a star fish on your tank, the copper medicine will kill it.
I have a Blue tang who has been 2-3 times covered in ich, the first time I isolated her and used medicine (something called like "ich out") which was supposed to be safe on reef tanks. The disease went away but came back stronger once I put her in the main tank. You could see her red flesh. I tried to removed her but couldn't do it. A few days later the skin was healing and the ich was gone. She gets it about once every 3-4 months but recover by herself. In my short experience, medicine doesn't do much for a marine tank But water changes and garlic food works miracles. Try that, garlic boost the immune system on the fish. Good luck, Ruben "Yonsei" wrote in message oups.com... On Feb 2, 6:32 pm, "Yonsei" wrote: I have an FO only talk with three fish. The tank is about 1 year old and in pretty good shape. Ick will not cause the fins to deteriorate. That usually is caused by bacterial infection. Check the packages at your LFS for treatments for "fin rot."
