Oh my.

Hey there fishy folks.
I know some of you idolize Faith from Bettatalk.com, but there are some things
that, as a Betta breeder, I simply do not agree with.
Don't get me wrong, she's created some fantastic lines, but some things she
says are either downright wrong, or half right.
I understand that breeders ways vary, but some of the things she says are off.
People have put her up on a pedalstal, but to me, she's simply another human
fish hobbyist who make mistakes, just like the rest of us.
Every once in a while I go to Bettatalk.com to check out what beautiful lines
she's got going and was almost shocked by what I read.
Somebody wrote her for help. Was probably charged the $10-20 cost for her to
offer her help to you about your specific problem ( I don't agree with doing
this).
They asked why her Betta flares and nips her Goldfish that she has in the same
tank.
Instead of saying that she shouldn't be housing a Goldfish in with a Betta
(Goldies are cold water fishes and Betta tropical-warm water fishes), she went
on to explain that all Bettas have individual personalities, etc.
She then said how both Goldies and Bettas don't need expensive filtration and
air pumps to survive. That's one of the top ways to kill a Goldfish fast!
Goldfish absolutely require BOTH.
She admitted not knowing much about Goldies, but come on. Research for 2
mintutes before saying something like that.
There isn't even a place to let her know that she made an error...a serious
error that could end up killing a Goldfish.
Oh, wait. There is a button to "flame" her. However, it leads you to a page
that has a cartoon of your flame email being flushed down a toliet.
Folks, she's not a Betta God. She's human. Humans make mistakes.
However, it takes a good person to learn from their mistakes and be able to
take criticism. Apparently, she's not willing to do either.
I was once one of those who idolized her. Not anymore.

I have run into this type of groups to many times. There is a leader and
there are followers. The followers love the group settings they don't
want the leader to be wrong, if the leader is wrong then they are wrong
so its a denial thing. The leader maked them dependent on them only, any
outside coments are concidered attacks on this family/group and they
feel the need to protect the leader thus protect the family/group.
You can find this kinda group in other fish groups. I learned also, any
groups that gives me the feeling our way or the highway, I choose the
highway, its a far better place to be then paying homage to a so called
guru of any kind. I applaud your escape!

I find this as no surprise Tynk, I am by no means an expert on aquariums,
but when you do something new with your tank, I think it helps to have a
good balance of willing to learn with a healthy dose of cynicism. One of the
other problems I see, is that because people talk from experience they are
unwilling to change their minds. Normally they have the attitude well it
worked for me, so it must be right, and everyone else is wrong.

Example: I could tell you, I'm an electrical engineer with two thousand
years experience in electricity, and I think it's safe to put a power cable
in your ear, do you believe me? No, experience tells you otherwise.

I have read so many 'exactitudes' for aquariums, but normally its is just
someone's experience. Before I bought my Discus I read that someone had kept
their Discus at a pH of 8.5, is he right or is he wrong? Common perception
would have you say he is wrong, but then he tells you his Discus are as old
as Methuselah and still ticking. As I always say, one size does not fit all.

I take things, practically EVERYTHING, with a grain of salt... don't believe
everything, even if it comes from the prophets of knowledge, until I see it,
feel it, hold it in my hands....

IOW, if brittany spears made a website and said that goldfish were to be in
a non filtered tank, you'd have thousands of goldies dying everyday, and the
followers would blame the glass for the killing... if she said so....
