You'll never get the information in a pet store.
There are 2 reasons:
1. They don't know
2. They don't care.
First, have you been shopping lately? Retail outlets are in a crisis!
Hiring anyone to staff their stores is difficult right now... hiring
qualified candidates... especially in specialty areas like tropical
fish is... almost impossible!
Don't beleive me? Check out your nearest national, big-box, pet
outlet.
After you find them, wait for the staff members to finish their
conversation about last night's party, and ask them a question.
Notice the blank stare.
And they look at YOU like YOU'RE an idiot!
When you go to a store like that you better be prepared to walk up to
an aquarium, point to the fish you want and say "I want that one".
Nuff said.
Secondly, as for them not caring... Ask yourself this, "When do you
spend the biggest chunk of money in this hobby?" At the very beginning
of course!
You need to invest in the aquarium, perhaps a stand, filter, heater
and other equipment, plants, chemicals and, oh yeah... fish!
That's one of the great things about this hobby. You could keep on
learning new things for your whole life ... if you want to.

this is the market place, how ever I do agree with swarve there is no reason
even if its true for the most part to bash the local fish store, I see
another one like this and I will block you and I suggest others do the same
as there is a real important for the local fish stores how ever poor the
advice give there is, my fish store how ever has been fairly good at give
good advice and has yet to give an answer they really don't know.

Then again the owner of my fish store is and avid fish and live plant keeper
as well. There is an old rule with farmers "don't let any one cut your
wheat if they don't keep wheat them selves" the reason for this is that one
who dont own wheat him self dose not turly understand the value and hard
work the farmer put into it . I think this is true with most things in life
you would not go to the butcher for medical advice but you might want to ask
him how to keep a knife sharp.

Just got sick of seeing it over and over.
As Jef says, trust people who have lots of healthy fish, they know what they
are doing.
