There must be an anerobic spot in your gravel or sand ,give it a thorough
vacuming or raking and you will see a load of gas bubbles escaping the substrate then do a large water change to remove any hydrogen sulphide build up in the water. ok a question
we have the penguin 330 bio wheel and a magnum 350 filter and we also have bubble airators in the back of the aquarium running all along the back isnt that enough airation? Or what else do I need to do??? thanks for all your help....Star "nanoreef" wrote in message e.rogers.com... star625 may have written: have noticed a strong sulfer smell so i did a partial water change and its not as bad now but it is still there....what causes this and how do I fix this??/ Any advice would be appreciated. The smell is probably hydrogen sulfide which is typically produced by anerobic bacteria. Often it is a problem with old dirty substrates. I think the only fix is to remove the fish from the tank, and then remove or at least stir up the substrate. Hydrogen sulfide is toxic is large concentrations. It takes the place of oxygen in the blood. Hydrogen sulfide is driven off by aration. Increas the surface movement until you find and fix the source. -- sg |

Just my tuppence worth, but I wouldn't rake it. I would use the vacuum tube, driving it deep into the gravel systematically and jiggle, this will ensure the H2S is taken away by the vacuum and not allowed to dissolve into the tank where with only a few ppm it will kill fish. As someone else said this is not a long term solution though. Cheers A |
