Default How much flourite for 55G tank?

I'm assuming fluorite is still considered one of the best (except for price)
substrates to u a planted tank, so I'm hoping to pick some up for my
new 55G tank right after christmas (when it should hopefully be on sale).
However, I'm not sure how much. I'm probably gonna be picking up the
fluorite before I get my hands on the tank, so I'm wondering what depth of
substrate would look good in a 55G (48*12*21 tall) and also what would be
good for the plants. Btw, I will be using substrate heating cables, in case
this affect the decision on depth.

Thanks,
Harry

I asked several days/weeks ago, doing the same as you, but here's where I am
so far, 2 bags won't cover it, 3 might do the job... I'm also mixing half a
bag of 25lbs small pea gravel with it...

I'm shooting for a 2.5-3.5 depth.... that's where I might end up with more
gravel/flourite than most...

From Seachem's website:

FlouriteT is a specially fracted stable porous clay gravel for the natural
planted aquarium. Although it may be mixed with other gravels, FlouriteT is
best used as an integral substrate bed. Any mixture should be at least half
FlouriteT. Gravel modifiers such as laterite are not necessary. FlouriteT is
not chemically coated or treated, and will not alter the pH of the water.
Although pre-washed, it should be rinsed before use to remove residual dust.
Slight initial cloudiness is normal and will clear rapidly. Each 7 kg (15.4
lbs) bag is sufficient for about a 2 inch deep bed in a typical 10 gallon
tank. Recommended use is 1 kg for about each 200 cm2 (31 in2) of tank
bottom.

My 37 gallon tank is 24inches by 20ish inches.

It took 3 bags to get 2.5 - 3 inches.

I bought mine from BigAlsOnline.com. With shipping, it was $17.00 a
bag shipped directly to your door. A bit cheaper than the $25.00 to
$28.00 that local dealers sell it for (plus you have to pay tax).

I have two tanks. One with Fluorite and Profile as my substrate and the
other with Onyx sand. The one with Onyx sand is doing so much better, there
is no comparison. My next tank will use Onyx sand or a mix of the two. I
don't have any added CO2 in the tanks.

Red, I used 3 bags in my 40gal long tank.

BTW, I ordered that plant book from Marcus $65.00 sounds like an awesome
price.

Default How much flourite for 55G tank?

I used 5 bags in my 55 gallon. 6 bags plus a large bag of regular
gravel to fill my 90 gallon. Both have a 3-4" deep substrate.

Hope that helps

For what it's worth, I believe I used 3 bags for my 29gal. Depth is 3" in
back sloping down to 2" in front.

I have two tanks. Fluorite, and one of personal information, as my substrate and other Onyx sand. An Onyx sand is much better to do so, there is are not comparable. My next tank will be used agate sand or mix the two. I without any additional carbon dioxide tanks.
