New Tank Diary: Week 1 by
Mark Henry
Well, after a little less than a week (did I mention that I was
impatient?) I appear to be the proud parent of brown algae. Yay! I had
originally bought only 45# of live rock from my LFS for my 60g tank.
Both my wife and I agreed that it looked kind of empty, but we couldn't
afford the prices at...

T5 compact versus linear by
Martin
Hi,
Does anybody have any opinion on power compact T5's as apposed to linear T5
lighting ?
In the UK power compact T5 equipment is much cheaper than standard T5
tubes, which one is better ?
Any help would be really appreciated as my tank is coming along well and I
want to go to the next level...

Live Rock Question by
Dave Stewart
I bought a pile of live rock that had been left outside. Temperature below
freezing.
Is it likely that all critters are dead?
Thanks.

cobwebs?! by
Adam C
Hi All,
Noticed in my smaller reef tank in the last month or so that i have what
look like cobwebs between some of the rocks, they are not coral feeding
strings since on a good number of the rocks there are no corals nearby.
They are all strings rather than webs, notice them more when i have a...

Brain Coral Splitting- Yeah by
Ann R
On June1 hubby bought me an open brain coral as anniversary gift. It was
oval and had 2 mouths. The pink outer ring has been slowly closing into a
figure 8. It now stays into the figure 8 and the outer ring is touching.
Another (third) lobe is forming. Today I looked closer and there is a...

Strike one... by
Mark Henry
I added the live rock yesterday. The ammonia was .25 before I added the
rock, and jumped to 1.0 after adding it. I haven't tested yet today, but
I'm sure it's on the way up. PH was stable, as was salinity and the
skimmer has just started to produce foam (although very weakly at this
point).
The...

Fish Food - 2 View Points by
Ann R
I needed to make up more "fish mush" so on my food shopping trip yesterday I
bought fresh scallops, squid, clams, flounder, shrimp and smelts for the
mixture. Plopped it into the food processor, whirled it, bagged it and
froze it. During the processing my husband walked into the kithcen.
Hubby -...

Lights and tank cover question. by
[email protected]
I have read some of the discussions about whether to use a glass cover
between your lights and the water surface. I have added a PC fixture to
my 29gal and have the fixture sitting on egg crate which sits on top of
the tank. This fixture has a plexiglass pane which I was thinking about
removing...

Phosphate reduction by
Jaime R-S
As an environmental specialist for the DOH of Florida, I was issuing
permits for Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems (OSTDS) on
households. While the state struggled to lower the parameters of sewage to
an optimum 10 BOD, 10 TSS, 10 N and 1 P (units in ppt) for each sample, they
never...

newbie needs help with marine fish setup by
[email protected]
About 6 months ago I started my 130gal sal****er aquarium - I was a
newbie then and still am. I originally populated it with about half a
dozen fish which all died in the first 3 months. I think my problem
was I bought fussy fish which are not easy to keep in a non established
system
I now have...

Feeding anemone by
R J
I have a rock ( flower ) anemone that is white with green tips. I have been
feeding it once a week with a mixed frozen fish food - it has some clams in
it. I've had it a couple of months and it appears healthy - closes down on
the food immediately.. Is this frequent enough? I've heard they...

Sources of live sand... by
Pszemol
Anybody could advise in choosing good source of live sand for DSB ?
I am not talking about the wet sand available in LFS.
I am talking about live sand shipped directly from the ocean.
What would be a good place to buy sand rich in variety of critters?

Skim in main tank or sump ? by
TheRock
Good evening fellow reefers,
I'm setting up a sump/refugium.
I can place the skimmer in the sump or leave it on the tank. (Aqua C Remora
Pro)
Where is the skimmer more effective: Sump, Main Display or it doesn't matter
?
TIA !!!

More newbie adventures by
Samwyse
Well, I spent the past week with relatives about 200 miles from here, so
the tank had plenty of time to "settle down". (For those joining late,
the tank contains live rock & sand, and one mantis shrimp; no little
vertebrates yet.) The first thing I noticed when I arrived home was a
slurping...

Mushrooms and lights? by
[email protected]
I notice when I get new Mushrooms they stay closed up for a day or
forever in some cases. My question is most stores have lights way above
the tanks. I am wondering if when they are put in my tank which the
distance from my power compacts is close to the surface if it might be
a problem. I just got...

well, tank is for sale, whine, cry, whine by
A few months back several of you replied to a post I made asking for skimmer
recommendations, and the majority recommended ASM, Aqua C, or Euro Reef. All
these appear to be in-sump designs. Because I bought a wet-dry system (which
will now only be used as a sump) when I bought the tank, I don't...

Wolf, You should know better than to abuse
rec.aquaria.marine.reefs by attaching all those photos.
And they are pathetic photos at that.
