My newsreader may have missed a post or two but as I understand it these
neon's were new fish you recently purchased. I don't remember you
mentioning you Q'd them.

Ah Ah Ahhhh! K*i L* caught you, Gill - shame shame on you!

They were the first in the tank - one great big, massive QT tank :-) so
nah, nah to you Mr Gardener...along with their Panda and Rainbow buddies
(oh and the mystery fish - he's now around 1cm definitely not a Platy or
Mollie - I think he might be a rainbow - either Boesman or Red and came
across with the Java moss)....

Seriously, I have fish sitting in two "QT" tanks waiting to go in
there...I had no room to put any more in "QT" and hadn't quite decided
who and what were going in the new tank so made the decision to use it
as a QT tank as well...I won't have any room to QT fish for the new tank
until I feel confident enough to move those currently in the smaller
tanks....which is a shame as my LFS has some Parkinson Rainbows that
look as if they will get quite special - I'm going to ask him if he will
keep them for me until the Neons stabalize - still got 5 40 hours after
the last death....

What I use is Esha 2000 - freely available in the UK and it does
seem to help pretty much everything! I had an outbreak that sounds
similar in my tetra tank - I added cardinals and didn't know they
weren't quarantined - and Esha 2000 brought a halt to it. I
recommend it very highly.

Anyway, just another opinion to throw into the mix!

I can't remember seeing this in any of the places I go to (UK)....did
you get it off the shelf or order it on-line?

Thanks
Gill

Looks like another wonder cure. Have to dig deeper and find out just
what's in this stuff.

===========
As the only fish in the new tank are recent purchases I've been using it
as one great big QT tank...(the tetras were the first added).

But can't this itself be a problem, as what happens if they were 100% fine
and you added something new that wasn't? Then the healthy tetras would
catch what the new ones had.........

I also
have a number of fish sitting in smaller tanks waiting to go in there -
these in "holding" have probably been waiting for 2-3 months effectively
in QT...

*THESE* are the fish, known healthy ones, that I would have added to the new
large tank and Qed the neons for at least 14 to 21 days in a small tank.

..the plan was to keep the new fish away from the old until such
a time as I had completed buying the new stock for the tank...

Just my opinion Gill, but I would have done the opposite. You're talking
about a very large tank to treat now and catching those small tetras to
remove them (and I certainly would) can cause you to break down the tank.
You may even be forced to drain most of the water....... this could have
been prevented.

I take on board your comment on how much of a nightmare it would be to
sterilize the big tank....

Trust me on this one - it *IS* a nightmare! I had to do a 55g some years
back because of a Typhoid Mary fish. When it happened again years later in
an outdoor GF pool I just dragged everything to the burn box and burned it
all!

It's a bit like when Ms. Solo catches you in the pond group. Time to say

========================
We all have our own ways of doing things. I would have done the opposite
of what Gill did and put the "safe" fish in the large tank first. All new
fish would have been Qed for at least 21 days due to the size of her new
tank. I wouldn't have taken a chance on anything getting into a tank that
large. But then I've been through the hassle of having to disinfect a 55g
and that was no walk in the park....... not to mention the disease,
whatever it was, killed just about everything in the tank. It's
heartbreaking to watch your fish die one by one and nothing working to cure
or help them.

When they catch fish in the wild for export no one checks these fish for new
diseases or unknown parasites. You pay your money and you take your
chance........

Use 2 nets, chaser and catcher. Keep the catcher absolutely as still
as possible, until the last moment (if you even need to move it).
Move the chaser slowly corralling them. When they approach the
catcher, a quick jerk can sometimes send them flying into the catcher.
Tetras instictively react first to moving objects (this won't work as
well with higher-order cichlids ;~).

My favorite trick is to put an irresistible food in a net close to the
surface, and wait. Shrimp pellets usually work pretty well. I just
pulled some gambusia out of the pond that way.

Did you read the FAQ? http://faq.thekrib.com

I've used that for Otos in a heavily planted 130g. Took a while,
catching one at a time, but what would be the alternative.

My favourite trick is positioning a big chunk of driftwood near the front
of the glass, position the catcher net tightly between the glass and the
wood, and then coral them in. In a tank of 100s of tetras, I could
easily catch 80 in one shot. Shoaling fish literally follow each other
into the net, and the first ones realise this is a net, but they are
sandwiched in by the rest of the pack following them. I could move most
of a 500 Neon tetra tank in about 4 netfulls (but Neons were especially
easy).

I've caught & moved many fish by hand. Sometimes I would net them and
hold the net horizontal underwater (with the frame out). I would by-hand
flip them around, inspect them and if ok, cradle them in my palm to the
fish bag. My wet skin is far less abrasive than a net, reducing the
incidence of Ich, by preserving their slime coat.

If I had anywhere near the amount of gallons that you have, I would
purchase my Melafix in the higher concentrated and less costly Pond
preparation. In fact, the next time I have to buy any, hopefully
never, I will probably get the concentrated stuff. Maybe I'll inquire
if the stuff stores well over a long period of time.

====================
To save $$$ and product you can also drain down a tank and use a drop-in
sponge filter or bubble-up box filter.

My problem is dropping them when they start to struggle. Fish are so slimy.
I'm paranoid about handling the water-bubble-eye goldfish. I was told they
can break the bubbles whether hand or net caught,.... and I'll soon have
several I have to move into the larger tank. I think I'll try and scoot
them into a bowl and move them water and all.

What is the best and safest way to move these goldfish?
