Default grossly round goldfish

My mom had a goldfish that looked like it swallowed a tennis ball! It
seemed otherwise healthy enough, but my husband decided to do "surgery" on
it to see what that growth was. It was all water inside. Needless to say,
the goldfish is no more, but what would have been wrong with it? A cyst?

My MIL had a large goldfish that did that. He went on that way for a little
over a year and then suddenly started to decline. It seemed at the time
that the trouble began when she netted him out of the pond to try to 'cure'
him so he wouldn't die while she was gone on an upcoming trip. He couldn't
handle the stress and finally had to be put down. He was barely alive.
Just enough to say he wasn't dead. It was truly disturbing to see him.
