After losing a few fish early in the year it is now evident that the water
lettuce in one of my gardens is the same size it was in June when

introduced.
The anacharis has barely grown and the water lily has just now produced
flowers. The water is crystal clear with no obvious explanation since I

have
no exotic filter or UV light.

Maybe a lack of trace elements? Have you tried muriate of potash, for
starters?

Sounds exotic to me. Never even heard of it. What is the purpose?

What is the water lettuce missing if my WH is nice and green but the edges of
my WL are turning yellow. All other plants look great.

Hi, Karen--

I had this problem all pond season, and the potash didn't do anything to
assist in greening the lettuces, nor did a trace element mixture. I ended
up finding clouds of little black gnats over all the lettuces as well as
some amongst the leaves. I think they were the culprits. Take a good look
at your plants and see if the bugs are camping out in yours, too.

Her
pond is shaded and mine is in full sun, I think maybe??? they're getting
sunburned? Anyone have beautiful WL in full sun?

Karen,
This sounds like the problem. WL will only tolerate a small bit of sun, and
dappled at that.

I don't know how beautiful, but I have large lettuce. The heads are about
15 to 18 or more inches across and would be larger, except they are so
crowded in the veggie filter. They are in full sun. You can see pictures
on my web page listed below.

Hi NJ

I checked my WL from various locations around the pond and didn't find

and any
infestations. These lettuce came from a friends pond and were the most
beautiful shade of green, growing babies on babies all still attached.

We've seen Rich's lettuce, hyacinths, and taro, etc.
He grows them BIG down there South of the Mason-Dixon line!
We decided he's got not only green thumbs, but green toes as well (although
Donna has a hand in some of it I think)!
Happy ponding,
Greg

I grow mine in the final filter before the water
goes back into the pond, hoping that it will take a lot of the nitrates out
of the stream.

that's where mine are in the final filter. What part of the country are you
in, Virginia? When I was in Houston, I had no trouble growing WL or WH, also
had a steady Ph of 8.7 without doing anything and the WL would grow dinner
plate size, so I guess it's what's not in the water here that's giving me
grief. Don't think I'll do anything about it this year, but next year I might
try the iron and see if that makes a difference.
