Default Snowflake eels escaping?

Exactly how concerned should I be about a snowflake eel escaping? I'm
starting a 75 gallon fish-only tank and want to include a snowflake
eel. My tank is well covered, but I do have two openings on the back
of my tank to allow for filtration hoses and a hang-on protein skimmer
and a heater and powerheads. The openings are about 2" wide and 10"
long (long and narrow). I know an eel CAN escape through a hole that
size, but WILL he? I've heard stories about people waking up to find
a dried stiff eel on the floor next to the tank. Are stories like
this the exception or the rule?

Thanks...
Gary

Greetings.

To be on the safe side you could use some eggcrate cut to fit in those
areas to prevent them from coming out of your tank.

Once an eel gets settled in and comfortable in the tank, they tend to stay
in. This usually takes 3 or 4 weeks to occur. Until then, he is right, use
the egg crate. And also throw in silicon, duct tape, super glue, and an
electric fence. They can and will, find any small hole and wiggle out of it.

I have a snowflake eel in my 55gal tank. He escaped once through the hole
for the filter. I found him on the floor and I thought he was gonner. I put
him back in the tank and he swam away. He has not ventured out of the
tanksince then and I now run my tank uncoverred because of the summer heat
wave. He's stayed put for the last 3 months. HTH.
