I got a red dwarf gourami recently and he seems quite healthy. However, he
likes to stay at the top of the water in the shade near the filter tubes, and go back and forth after his reflection. Do gourami's need partners like you might do for tetras? If so, are male blue dwarf gouramis compatible with the red ones? I really don't want any more gouramis, but if he should be others I'd like it to be another colorful fish and my understanding is that the females are a bit bland. thanks, dwhite |

Gouramis do just as well by themselves as with others. So you don't
have to add another one if you don't want too. Vicki "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow fond of it." ~ Robert E. No, Dwarf Gouramis are highly territorial - esp if you have plants, rocks
etc... They do not like other males - like Siamese Fighting Fish. I'd only keep one. If you are going to introduce even a female - you have to introduce them into the tank together - otherwise they end up fighting. I tried keeping dwarf gouramis - the ones with the coral blue and red strips - I kept 5 initially. My tank is 70cmX50x50cm. They all started fighting each other and died from their war wounds. I kept 3 fish. One kept to the left, the other right - and one poor devil had the middle. The one who had the middle - or no man's land - was constantly harrassed by the fish on either side. Once he died - the other two kept venturing into each other's territory. In the end both fish got injured and died. Then I bought two. But that didn't work either. After lossing so many fish, I just kept one. He lasted for quite awhile. They are cute buggers though. One of the fish - a metallic shimmering coral blue dwarf gourami with red strips would squirt a jetstream of water at objects - ie a bloodworm -on the top of the aquarium glass to bring them down - just like an archer fish. I'm really not too sure what's wrong. I didn't overstock. I had an Eheim 2222 filter going - the temperature was set at 25C. I was doing regular water changes. And the other fish I had in the tank - 5 cardinal tetras - were OK. There was plenty of live plants. |

The tank I got this one out of at the fish store had probably 10 of them in one little tank, but I suppose they don't stay there that long. The gourami is a strange fish. He blows bubbles for awhile, then kind of takes his good ole time deciding to eat, and then goes after everything once he's gotten it in gear. I am also surprised after not having fish for so many years how the fish behavior changes so dramatically after 3 or 4 days of acclimating to a new tank. They are much more active and "normal" after some adjustment. thanks, dwhite |

He blows bubbles for If the gouramis are there for a little while - it takes them sometime to get used to the new surroundings. That small tank probably also has little in the way of plants etc.. so the gouramis don't have anything to claim as their own territory. Like I said, if you want to keep many gouramis - the tank has to be relatively free of plants, rocks, ornaments etc... so there is nothign for them to lay claim to. |

Correction... I meant to say They do not like other male gourami fish - and
are nearly similar in temperament to the Siamese Fighting Fish which does not tolerate other male SFF. So I'd only keep one. (But if you want to keep more - it is best to keep them in an empty tank - with no plants, rocks etc.. where they can claim territory on) "Crimson Castle" wrote in message ...
