Default pickling lime where to find it

I remember a few weeks ago somebody was looking for pickling lime to make
kalkwaßer. Well I went to several stores tonight where I had bought it in
the past and there was none to be found. One of the managers said he hadn't
been able to get any for several months. I went to Ball's website and they
sold off their canning division to homecanning in 1993. Ball pickling lime
is not listed it appears to have been replaced by Ball Natural Pickling
Crisp which is CaCl2 according to the package. I went to Lowes and got
50lbs of limestone which is basically ground up CaCO3, CaO, MgCO3, & MgO.
I think Ball pickling Lime was pure CaO.

Thanks I just talked to the local Hardware store ( you know where the people
working there actually know what they have for sale ) Apparently the
shortage is due to the very wet summer we had causing a ton of cucumbers to
grow and everybody trying to pickle them. Everybody I talk to has said its
been back ordered for a couple of months. I'll try online

I use standard pickling lime from the grocery store...

Works fine. Coralline algae spreads like wildfire!

No, plasters lime IS pickling lime (calcium hydroxide). There should'nt be
any problems using it.
