Default Topping off water or auto fill valve?

i'm debating the pond thing, the wife is bouncing off the walls hoping it
comes thru...

water changes and auto fills came to mind... do ponders just pull over the
hose and add water or do they incorporate a top off valve in the system
somewhere, and if so, where? at the trickle filter?

Once you start debating, it's all over. Just start digging!

I have an auto-fill system with a dechlorinator filter inline. There has
been more than one post on this news group about people killing their fish
by accidentally leaving a hose on.

I pre-plumbed my pond with a fill system that fills at the head of the
stream. I also layed in pipe, during construction, to add an auto fill
at my skimmer box, eventually. http://www.bunchobikes.com/pond6.htm

We use a toilette valve. Never have to do a thing. You can see it on the
website (below). Easy to install.

I have a dedicated whole house filter on the pond (chlorine filled water
here in TX) that is hooked to my sprinkler system main-line ($30). It runs
through a pressure reducer ($4) and into a stock tank float switch ($12).
This is attached to my first settling tank (a used horse water barrel).

Makes for a nice slow refill. Keeps from shocking the fish. You want to
avoid any mass water changes.
