Default Plans for Bio Filter...

I have been searching for better plans than the ones I have found on the
Krib for building a Bio Filter... Looking for plumbing and pump ideas, also
more detailed designs and photos on this type of unit.. Was thinking about
using a 10USG glass tank to start with.. Any other suggestions as where to
look or if someone has something posted I could not find.. This would be
for a fresh water set up, so a refugiium would not be ideal ( Malawi Tank..)

Default Plans for Bio Filter...

I'd imagine it would make a fine sump for a 55G. I've used
20s under a 135G.

Bio filters are sized on feed rate. The protein in it is
digested into ammonia, one way or another. It really
doesn't take much clean space, about 2.5 sq ft/gram, to
convert the ammonia. Lots of easy ways to accomplish that.

Then you have to figure out how to filter particulates.

Bio-balls work fine for bio, not for particulate. Maybe
some floss or felt.

Or, you can build a bio-wheel using a pleated swimming pool
cartridge and a PVC pipe for an axle. Let water from the
overflow turn it, water wheel style. Again, great bio, but
not so good for particulates.

Or, 3 stacked trays of quartz sand (in air) with water
pouring through them. Clean the top one by just dumping it
into a bucket of water, and pouring off the dirty water
(Hint: make the tray slightly less wide than a 5G bucket).
Move the middle tray to the top, bottom to the middle, and
slide your cleaned try in the bottom. Clean one tray per
cycle. Nice because you get great bio and fine particulate
filtration too. This is pretty "old school", but the
concept really hasn't been improved upon with technology.

Or just go with a good canister. By the time you buy a good
pump, at 4+ feet head, and the sump bits, and the overflow,
you may not be saving much.
