I'm so bummed. Goliath, my big, beautiful, friendly shubunkin goldfish
jumped out of the half-barrel pond last night. I found him dried out
this morning. *sigh*

I've never figured out how to cover the barrels to keep predators out
and fish in with all the water hyacinth and emersed plants I'm growing.

Hi..

:-( Did you notice any violations?

I've never figured out how to cover the barrels to keep
predators out and fish in with all the water hyacinth and
emersed plants I'm growing.

How big was he? Possibly a gas exchange problem at the
surface caused by these water hyacinth?

He was about 5" SL. There's a spillway that flows into his barrel that
provides good splash and oxygenation. I've never seen him pipe or gasp,
even in the heat of summer at night. He mostly stayed in the roots of
the hyacinth and swam right over for his food.

I had to partially drain one of the three barrels to fix a leak. It sat
unfiltered for about a week. I had to let it drain on its own to locate
the leak, siphon out some more water, and then sit for a couple more
days to dry completely. Once I finished the repair, I figured I should
drain all the stagnant water and refill the barrel with fresh, so the
pond got a 1/3 water change yesterday afternoon. It usually gets about
1/6. I suspect I shocked Goliath with the large water change. I doubt
a sudden influx of week-old stagnant water would have been any better,
though.

Fortunately, none of the other fish seem stressed or affected.

I'm sorry to hear that. I think we've all had at least one fish do the jump
into oblivion. I have 3 1/2 barrels and can't net them either because of
the plants. I put small cull GF in them to keep the mosquitoes down and
hope for the best. Most are gone by fall thanks to the frogs that invade
these barrels over the summer.

I feel your pain. Last year during a very loud
thunderstorm, my beautiful young butterfly
koi jumped out of a stocktank. I found it on
the ground the next day.

I considered adding some kind of height to
the stocktank that would keep suicidal fish
inside but never figured out what to do.

My condolences, truly.

Gail

Thanks. I headed outside with the jar of food he's been eating and
suddenly realized that I didn't need it anymore. I went to LFS to see
if they had any nice shubunkins but decided to wait. I did come home
with a bag of Nerites snails - quite a find!
