new tank

hi, this is my first post here, i think (may have posted one other on
here before). anyways, so i have a birthday coming up next month and
i'm looking to get a bigger aquarium than the 29g that i have now. I'm
looking at getting a 55-72g, and originally i was thinking of getting
balas and oscars, but now i'm thinking of maybe a cichlid only tank. I
definately want at least one oscar, but i don't want just one fish all
by it self in there so what other fish couldi put in there? i heard
somewhere that a jack dempsey could be a good tankmate, but i heard
they are extremely territorial fish, convicts were other fish i have
wanted to put in my 29g, but someone said they would terrorize the 5
gouramis i have there, so maybe those could go in with oscars? there's
somebody who lives nearby who's convicts keep breeding and is selling
baby's at $0.50 ea.

i guess this group has pretty much shut down then? no answers? anyways,
in case any one does answer, i've changed my mind and i'm going for a
Jack Dempsey tank, with the hopes of getting a breeding pair. I know i
will need at least 6 in order to find a pair, but coudl any one else
give me any tips or info on JD's?

Jacks get upto 10" long. 6 in a 55 is way too many. They are easy to care
for but will always be digging in the gravel and uprooting plants. Maybe you
could just find a breeding pair.

oh sorry i forgot to mention, i have found a place in my city that
sells tanks for cheap, for now i'm going to get a 75g-150g, but most
likely around 90 or 100g

Hi Dave, I used to have a 125 gallon mixed south american chiclid tank.
A lot of these fish can be mixed, but make no mistake even a 55 gallon
tank is not that big to these fish. I read that you have gouramies with
your chiclids, unless there large gouramies they will eventually be
outgrown by your chiclids. Bala sharks are not an aggresive fish, they
may be bullied by larger fish.If you need any other advice or help you
can post here(I check stuff here about every week) or write me direct
under the subject matter "Tropical Fish"

P.S. You should be able to sex JD's at about 3 to 4 " , males will have
longer fins, just like convicts

ok thanks ed!, i have definately moved past the 55g idea, and am
looking now at at least a 75, but mostlikely a 90+ tank. as for
gouramis, those are in my 29g tank, and theres no cichlids in there,
just 2 dwarf gouramis, 3 pygmy gouramis, 5 zebra danios and 3 serpae
tetras. i do not have any cichlids in the house at the moment, i am
planning on getting some after i get a big tank and it is cycled. and
as of right now, i was planning on getting about 6 JD's to try and
breed them, but i just do not have enough "grow out" tanks. so i am
looking for cichlids that can mix.i was thinking maybe some convicts,
and/or and couple oscars, with plans for another 55ish tank that i
could move the oscars into when ever the convicts breed, or a tank
divider.

With good conditions convicts will breed about every couple of months.
Some other fish I used to have in my big tank were Convicts, Texas
Chiclids, Jack Dempseys, Large Black Sharks, Firemouths,Jewel Chiclids,
Clown Knife Fish, and a large Leopard Eel. My catfish of choice was a
Marble Shovelnose.

all those fish you've just mentioned are pretty much what i've been
looking into, except for the eel, my mom has a no "no eel" rule, they
creep her out lol.
