centrifugal pumps - what is the purpose for the clutch? by
Pszemol
When you take your average powerhead apart you will
probably notice that the impeller is attached to the
shaft with a kind of clutch allowing it to rotate
freely on the shaft about 3/4 of the whole turn...
Is this to allow pump a sure start or does it play
any other role ? How is this "feature"...

Another PC retrofit question by
Mark Cooper
The kit I have did not come with an on/off switch. It was supposed to, but
it didn't. Since I am going to have this unit attached to a timer, do I
neccessarily have to have a switch?
If I go to the hardware store and get a switch, will most any appropriately
sized toggle switch work?
Thanks,
Mark

RED SEA PRIZM SKIMMER by
RubenD
Hello all, I just setting up my first marine aquarium and got a red sea
prizm skimmer.
However, it seems to me it blows too much bubbles into the tank, not only
scaring the fish but also obstructing the view.
Any ideas?
Is that normal?
Also, I wanted to ask about lighting. Apparently if I...

Randall's pistal shrimp & Black ray shrimp goby by
dc
I have a black ray shrimp goby which I love (Stonogobiops nematodes). I
plan on purchasing a Randall's pistol shrimp for this fellow (A. randalli).
I am interested in this pairing because I think I would enjoy having the
appropriate shrimp this watchman goby exclusively bonds with in the...

Being broke ain't all bad. by
Mark Cooper
Not having as much disposable income, I have to be careful about what I
buy, and haven't been able to add any livestock for awhile. The good news
is I'm prevented from rushing things.
On a related note, the local Petsmart offered to match any online price for
salt mix, so I went in with a print...

how to clean a barrel? by
exotec
We recently acquired a nice (used) barrel, which we'd like to use with
our RO/DI system, and for mixing salt. The question is, I'm not enough
of a chemist to know what steps we need to take to get it clean enough
that it won't impact the water quality in our tanks.
This barrel originally contained...

Gurgle Gurgle Slurp Gurgle by
Craig J
I have a very loud and extremely bothersome hanging filter on the back
of my 110 gal reef tank.
It's the kind of filter with two PVC pipes that stick up and each has
a "sponge" filter over it.
Any tips to keep it quiet?

PC retrofit question by
Mark Cooper
I have a 65w PC retrofit kit. I also have some AllGlass fluorescent
fixtures that aren't doing anything. Would this light get too hot for this
plastic fixture?
I was thinking I could put a layer of cardboard between the reflector and
the housing to absorb some of the heat.
Thanks,
Mark
