good fuge gone bad

I've got a serious case of runaway growth over the rock work in my tank
with this brown star polyp-ish pest. It has 8 tentacles and encrusts
like made by sending out tubes from which the polyps...

Beach vrs. Tank sand test
So, what about using beach sand from an area not typically associated
with tropics or reefs like the North coast of California? Might this
still be considered beneficial?
