Check your filter immediately!

Are you using ammochips or some other amonia remover? Replace it or
take it out completely and substitute a good quality carbon.

Do you use resins? Are they old - more than 4 weeks or so? Replace or
remove.

Is your filter sponge clean or filled with debris? Rinse out with
treated tap water or (better) aquarium water from the tank and replace.

Do you use biomedia? Is it exhausted? Some (like the ones in the
Aquaclear filters) need to be replaced after 3 or 4 months. Others
only require rinsing.


Don't change everything in the filter at one time. Rinse the sponge,
change the carbon or amonia chips now. Change bio media in a couple of
weeks OR, mix new biomedia with old to seed the new stuff faster. You
should see IMMEDIATE improvement.

And don't add any medicines YET!
