"Frank" wrote in message oups.com... Hello Elaine - thought you fell off the earth or something... You and yours, and every body else out there, have a beautiful Christmas.......... Frank Thanks Frank, but I think maybe you're confusing me with another Elaine because this is my first post on this group, although I've posted on alt.aquaria.tropical.fish.hobbist a few times. Anyway, the same to you and everyone else. Elaine (K) Hi, Frank. I got busy with schoolwork. But I'm back too. Welcome, Elaine K! Oh - and I totally agree with harlequins. They're tolerant of higher pH and stick together in an unusually tight shoal. -- Elaine T __ http://eethomp.com/fish.html '__ rec.aquaria.* FAQ http://faq.thekrib.com |

I also think harlequins are nice looking fish.
Just curious, I tried to keep harlequins 5 or so years ago in my tank with a PH of 8.2 and they would die off quickly (same with any type of tetra). Are they finky about hard water? I didn't want to battle hardwater with chemicals and the like, so I switched to Tanganykan cichlids and they are extremely happy. |

They're soft water fish, hovever I have a shoal of the closely related Espei rasboras in my moderately hard water here. They're at about pH 7.8 and seem healthy (eating, pooping, and growing). It's hard to know how different our water is, though. Yours may be more mineralized. Harlequins certainly can't breed in hard water and high pH. -- Elaine T __ http://eethomp.com/fish.html '__ rec.aquaria.* FAQ http://faq.thekrib.com |

It's TDS (total dissolved solids) they are finky about. Different pH (high or low) doesn't seem to do anything but keeping them from breeding............ Frank |
