Default Guppies tank set up.

I've got two tropical fish tanks, I'm getting ready to up grade to a new tank and conbind the two, so i'll have a few free tanks. I was thinking of getting guppies because there easy(from what i hear) and pretty.

My question is, i've never had guppies, and i've read taht you should put a little tank salt in there tank. Is this a must? Or just your choice?
